Panic at the Disco finally calms down enough to complete new CD

Panic at the Disco endured its share of comparisons — not always flattering — to modern pop bands like Fall Out Boy and the Killers as the group’s platinum-certified 2005 debut CD, ”A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” turned the band into arena-headlining stars seemingly overnight.

Now with Panic at the Disco’s second CD, ”Pretty. Odd,” in stores, a different comparison has been surfacing — to the Beatles.

Panic at the Disco singer Brendon Urie said any parallels have more to do with the group’s philosophy in making ”Pretty. Odd” than stylistic similarities.

”They’re one of our favorite bands,” Urie said in a recent phone interview. ”They wrote timeless music, and you can always go back to it and it never gets old. I think in that sense, that’s what we wanted to kind of create, not just specifically going after one band’s sound, but just the philosophy of creating something different to make it timeless.” Read the rest of this entry »

Panic at the Disco: No Promises For a Third Album in 2008

“Every time we say anything, we have to [go back] and say ‘No, that’s not what we meant,” laughs Panic at the Disco’s Ryan Ross, referring to recent reports the band had enough material for a third album to come out later this year. “We have some songs,” he clarifies. “But who knows if they’ll be for anything.”

The band is currently in the middle of their two-month headlining tour for the recently released Pretty. Odd.. Bassist Jon Walker says Panic never really stopped writing songs after recording the album, but emphasizes it’s been “nothing more than recording them on an acoustic guitar.” Though their busy touring schedule takes them through at least the end of the year with gigs in the States and abroad, Ross says he’d like to do a record when things wind down, “Just so we don’t have to write all new songs because we’re sick of these.”

My Bamboozle: Behind the Scenes With Panic at the Disco

If I had five minutes alone with Snoop Dogg …
Ryan Ross: We’d talk about world issues, global warming.
Brendon Urie: We’d get into that sensual seduction, if you know what I mean, involving some keytars and smoke-filled video scenes.

What’s the best part of headlining this festival?
Jon Walker: This is actually our first time headlining a festival, it’s kind of crazy. We’ve played at some pretty big festivals in Europe, but it’s one of our biggest shows ever in America.
Urie: We’re actually not planning anything.

Nine In the Afternoon (Acoustic Version) + Behind the Scenes at the AotW Shoot

Last month’s Panic At the Disco’s MTV Artist of the Week shoot is the shoot that keeps on giving. First Panic, MTV and Atlantic released a short film called Panic At the Disco In American Valley, comprised of footage shot in the desert towns of Baker and Nipton, California and Jean, Nevada. And earlier this week they released an acoustic version of “Nine In the Afternoon” from the same shoot. Given this surfeit of Panic footage, we thought we’d dig a little deeper to see what other gems the Panic shoot held. So we asked MTV staffer Brennan Stasiewicz, who wrote and directed the Panic shorts, for some behind-the-scenes secrets of the epic Panic shoot. See what he told us after the jump.

“Brendon had no problem at all driving the fully restored 1962 VW bus. The only problem was that the speedometer was broken. Fortunately the green machine couldn’t go faster than about 50 mph.” Read the rest of this entry »

Bringing On Some Latter-Day Beatlemania

When the Panic at the Disco-headlined Honda Civic Tour stopped at DAR Constitution Hall on Wednesday night, it wouldn’t have been terribly difficult to mistake the bill for the cast of a John Hughes film. The band Phantom Planet played the troubled loner, and Hush Sound filled in the role of the cute but angst-ridden girl. Motion City Soundtrack was the cool band’s geeky best friend. And Panic at the Disco was, of course, the romantic lead.

Having largely ditched the odious emo-goes-Broadway style that catapulted the group to popularity, the Las Vegas quintet performed a set of solid Beatlesque pop songs drawn from its recent sophomore album, “Pretty. Odd.” The audience of teenage girls went supersonic upon hearing the record’s lead single, “Nine in the Afternoon,” and “Behind the Sea,” featuring some harmonies that were surprisingly psychedelic for a band that was, not too long ago, wearing top hats and sporting heavy eyeliner.

Panic at the Disco expands its sound and garners critical praise

Panic at the Disco bassist Jon Walker checks in from Miami, where he’s just come back from getting sunburned after an afternoon at the beach. Soon, he’ll put on a fancy suit and tie and hit the stage, where he’ll play for hundreds of young, screaming hipsters.

Such is the life of a 22-year-old rock star. A last-minute addition to the Panic at the Disco lineup, Walker became part of an overnight pop sensation that found itself gracing the cover of national rock magazines when its members were barely out of high school.

Vocalist Brendon Urie, guitarist Ryan Ross and drummer Spencer Smith were 17-year-old buddies from Las Vegas when they suddenly had a No. 1 hit on MTV with the video for “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” They scooped up Walker when they were in Chicago for a tour stop, replacing original bassist Brent Wilson.

Both the single and the album went platinum, the sort of breakout that’s increasingly rare these days.

“I don’t think we ever expected to make a living making music,” said Walker. “But we’re still young and still having fun, so we’re just trying to enjoy it.” Read the rest of this entry »
